The Peak District itself is comprised of two areas, the White Peaks and the Dark Peaks, which relate to the rock colour and formations of the two areas. The White Peak is limestone landscape with flat plateaus cut by steep-sided valleys or ‘dales’ , whereas the Dark Peak is a gritstone landscape with dramatic, vast plateaus and long, rocky ridges and edges.
