The Peak District is comprised of two distinct areas, as determined by the landscape and rock colour of each. The White Peak is predominantly a limestone landscape with many steep-sided valleys (Dales). The Dark Peak is mainly gritstone with dramatic, high areas such as Kinder Scout, and has many rocky ridges and edges. The White Peak is at the southern end, and the Dark Peak is further up at the North.
